MOTIONLAB was assigned to create an unique and impressive multimedia performance for the Austrian Sports Award ("Gala Nacht des Sports") 2014. The very special about: this event was broadcasted live on television by the ORF at primetime!

We had to present the 3 nominees and the winner of the category "Rookie of the year" ("Aufsteiger des Jahres") in a creative and impressive way. This is what we came up with: one performer on stage with massive visual orchestration in the background and perfect sound-design. If these different layers come together, you can create such unique experiences.

Over 1.500 people at the event and approx 350.000 TV watchers have seen this exciting show! We are very proud and want to thank all our supporters and partners, who make that possible!

The performer sets foot on stage and presses the Play-button on the screen. From then on, he is trapped in a mystical game-world where he becomes the player and must interact with the environment in order to survive. The only thing he knows: he must find the treasure.

On his journey through 6 unique levels, he must solve various quests and puzzles and use special skills to evade bats, strange turtles, spiders and piranhas. He must overcome various obstacles and find clever solutions to tricky situations. He must win a high speed race and beat the epic boss in a dramatic final battle.

The only thing which helps him to overcome these challenges are POWER-UPS, in the form of leaves from a magical plant. Besides this he must trust in himself and his abilities. He has to be brave, agile, clever and fast. In the end the treasure is near but will he reach it?

:: SOCIALCRITIC INTENTION

In the original art show, the player does not win the treasure, instead dying at the end. After overcoming various difficult challenges, the player becomes over-confident and thusly dies. It is revealed then that he was the 357th person who attempted to get the treasure.

In a society, values and norms are repeatedly changing. Nowadays, it seems that everywhere in the world, especially in the industrialized world (the so called "first world countries") the most important thing is: getting the gold! Get rich, become famous and gain power. To achieve this goal, we accept everything e.g. unbelievable high workloads, outwitting our competitors - using any means, accepting exploitation of other humans and nature as a "part of the game". And on our way to the (alleged) top, we focus on doing it on our own, refusing help from anyone else because one thing seems to be clear: we should NEVER divide up the "cake".

This performance shall illustrate that issue, and question: "Is that really the best way to act?"

:: NO PANIC ! CUSTOMIZATION POSSIBLE

To be more attractive for the corporate market, we developed the customization package which includes product placement in different ways and an alternative HAPPY END. This is likely our "part of the game" situation. ;-) Please feel free to ask about available options.

:: SHOWS BOOKABLE WORLDWIDE

The show can be booked as ad-free art show or to some extent customized and aligned to the needs of the client and his/her brand. Shows can be booked in several durations and can be delivered completely hardware equipped.

:: LEVEL OVERVIEW

LEVEL 1:
The Player finds himself in a mystical world and starts exploring it. He comes to the first barrier - somehow he must turn a gear to move the elevator down, but he doesn't have enough power to do so. After a while he recognizes a flying seed from the plant in the top right corner. He waters the seeds and a magical plant begins to grow. After eating a leaf from this plant, he gains extra powers which enable him to move the gear. The adventure continues...

As we thought about this invasion of the unknown population, it was clear that the sculptures have to be light, easy to handle and transport, run independent of the power grid, yet be a size that people can see from far away and instantly become attracted to it.

We wanted to combine familiar, known elements with something new, or something known but interpreted in our way so that the known element is a kind of gateway for people passing by, thus delivering a new interpretation which grabs their attention. Furthermore it would be cool to make it easy to produce without the need for specialized knowledge, like Keith Haring's philosophy: "You can do it on your own. Do it yourself!" We want to add: The world is a construction kit.

Months ago we came in contact with the endless universe of paper folding techniques. It attracted our attention as we found it fascinating to start from a single piece of plain paper and by following certain folding principles, forming a 2- or 3 dimensional object out of it. Although at that time we played mostly around with geometrical patterns and abstract geometric objects, Origami was already in our mind. This reduction of body and form, without loosing its typical appearance or characteristic that you already know it's a bird, a swan, a pig, whatever... is something really fascinating.

At this point we have found our basic element: Origami-animals. Following one of our principles: "BIG IS BEAUTIFUL", we decided to build animals in life-size. We choose animals, which are legendary creatures or at least stand for certain characteristics. Fables are deeply intertwined in our language. Often we use certain animals to describe or underline certain human characteristics, such as "smart as a fox", "lazy as a pig" or "crazy as a monkey". We liked the idea that the sculptures may inspire such thoughts, associations or emotions.

The glowing wires which are attached to the edges creates a new interpretation for the viewer. It has something futuristic and sci-fi-like, as if they came from outer space. It seems they have an unknown, pure and clean form of energy which makes them glow. But what are they doing here? Where are they come from? What do they want?
We don't have a clear answer to this questions. The real question is: What are YOU doing here?

In the end, the project is a kind of search or a trace - mainly of yourself and the world around you, if you will allow it to be. The project title underlines this intention: TR.ON stands for TRace ON, a special "debug" code in the computer programming language "BASIC". ORIGAMI comes from ori meaning "folding", and kami(gami) meaning "paper".

Because of the highly complex field of work, a cooperation with artists and designers from different fields was needed - Neon Golden, Franz Piffl (industrial design), Atelier Alexa (jewelery design), Audiodevice (sound) and Iftom (mounting) all lent us their helping hands (and minds) in putting this together.
